What is Interferential Therapy?

Interferential Therapy is a treatment that uses a small current of electricity to aid in the treatment of various conditions.  By changing the frequency, intensity, etc.  IF therapy can be used in many different ways.

Some common conditions that are treated with IF therapy are:

-         Pain reduction

-         Edema (swelling)

-         Muscle Spasm

-         Promote tissue healing

-         Muscle re-education & Strengthening

-         And treatment of joint pain (shoulder, knee, hip etc)

IF therapy has been in use for many years and its effectiveness is well documented.  IF will help increase blood and lymphatic flow thru tissues.  It helps to control swelling and it also decreases the time it takes to recover from injury.

Here are some Frequently Asked Questions regarding IF therapy.

 Is IF Therapy Safe?

Yes, it is very safe.  IF therapy has a proven track record, has been used extensively throughout the country, and has proven to be very safe for patients.  There are some that IF is not right for, see the next question.

I have a pacemaker, is it ok to use IF?

In this case NO.  People that have an artificial pacemaker should not use IF therapy.  Also if you are pregnant it should not be used.

Does it hurt?

No, almost all patients report feeling a slight vibrating sensation and then a relaxing feeling.  Many times a heat pack is used in conjunction with IF to further the relaxation of muscles.  .
